Nothing art related today, instead a short review of a game I played today, yaaaaaaay! Objectivity, get the hell out, here we go:

E.V.O. Search for Eden is a SNES game that I heard about once or twice in passing but never really thought about playing. Today I came across it and decided to give it a try. I've been playing the game for the last 3 hours and I can say without a doubt it's one of my favorite games ever. I imagine most people have played it, but if you haven't the game is quite simple. You start out as a fish long, long ago in Earth's history and consume a crystal that allows you to spend points you've gathered from eating other species to evolve using "Mysterious Time Streams". You make your way through the epochs of history evolving constantly to suit your needs.

The graphics have aged well, the music repeats quite a bit but never gets old or annoying, the controls are tight and respond well, and the gameplay is absurdly fun. Its difficulty is that of a fair challenge, not unlike Souls games. You can get through the game without taking any damage at all if you play well enough. Or, you could get stunlocked and killed in an instant, it depends entirely on whether you can consistently do well and adapt to the situations. It is challenging, but fair. Out of all the bosses I have fought so far, I feel only the first one strays from the idea of a fair challenge, but it's not unbeatable. The game can get grindy sometimes for some of the better evolutions, but not once have I gotten bored while farming up points.

The game does have a few low points though. It has a hard time handling more than four enemies on the screen at once and will slow down immensely. Also, I'm not entirely sure if it was intended or not, but I've managed to, on multiple occasions, open up the evolution screen and evolve something cheap to get healed back up to full (oh jeez, I originally typed "fool". I need to learn how to pronounce words properly) and finish off whatever I was fighting. I'm going to consider it a glitch until otherwise shown.

Overall, this game gets my Seal of Approval. If you've played it, damn you for playing the game before me. If you haven't, go play it. Now.

Hehe I did play this when it came out on the Snes back in the day. I ended up replaying it when I got married and then after my kids were old enough to understand. My wife loves this game so much, its one of the few games she would actually watch me play, and even my daughter got to play it herself. Its simplicity as in what to do is what makes it so much fun. While of course in most stages getting the most expensive things are the way to go, those who love a good challange would just create something they find appealing and try to beat the game that way. (man i feel old) My only complaint is one song is overused alot with different variations and its a short loop, you bump into it in the age of dinosaurs and its the only downside i can think of.
